ISO/IEC 42001:2023 AI Management System
ISO 42001 online: from self-assessment to certificate
You answer 40 yes/no questions about your AI management system. Once you have passed and paid, the certificate arrives within 4 hours. No auditor visits your site, and anyone can verify the certificate by number or QR code.
01: Process
How does ISO 42001 certification online work?
The whole route runs in a browser. You book no auditor and nobody comes to your office. Five steps lead to the certificate.
Start the self-assessment
Open the assessment for ISO 42001. It is free and needs no registration.
Answer 40 questions
Every question is yes or no. They follow the requirements of the standard, from your role as AI provider, producer or user to the controls over data and operation.
Reach the pass mark
All 13 mandatory questions need a yes. Of the other 27 questions, at least 18 need a yes.
Pay for the first year
You pay after passing. No account is needed to buy.
Receive the certificate
SICE reviews your assessment. G6 Agency AG then issues the PDF, within 4 hours after passing and payment.
The PDF carries a certificate number and a QR code. Both lead to a public verification page.
02: Preparation
What to prepare before you start
The questions ask about things that exist in your company, not about plans. Software vendors with AI features, developers of AI models, insurers, banks, healthcare providers, staffing firms using AI tools in HR and IT service providers will recognise most of them. Collect the following first and you can answer from documents instead of from memory.
- Your role
- Decide whether you provide, produce or use AI systems. The answer determines which requirements concern you.
- AI policy and responsibilities
- A written policy, and named people who are responsible for the AI systems in your company.
- AI risk assessment
- A method to identify AI risks and decide how to treat them, with the results written down.
- Impact assessments
- A documented look at how each AI system affects the people it concerns.
- Statement of Applicability
- A list of the Annex A controls that apply to you, and a reason for each one you leave out.
- Life cycle controls
- Rules for training data, development and operation of every AI system you provide or use.
03: Scoring
How is the self-assessment scored?
Two conditions decide the result. Both must be met.
| Question group | Number of questions | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory requirements of the standard | 13 | All answered yes |
| Other questions | 27 | At least 18 answered yes |
| Total | 40 | Both conditions met |
The 13 mandatory questions cover requirements of the standard that you cannot skip. A single no there means no pass, however many other questions you answer yes.
Your answers are your declaration. SICE reviews every assessment before a certificate is issued, so answer from what you can show.
04: Zertify
Who issues the certificate, and where does Zertify fit in?
Zertify is the platform. It runs the self-assessment, takes the payment and delivers the PDF. The certificate itself is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, the Swiss Institute of Certification and Education. It rests on your self-assessment, with no on-site audit, and a short online re-audit confirms it every year.
Your customers can check it without asking you. They enter the number or scan the QR code and land on the verification page. That helps when a purchasing department or a supplier questionnaire asks for proof of your AI governance.
What the standard itself requires is explained on the ISO 42001 page.
05: Comparison
ISO 42001 online compared with an on-site audit
On the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, an auditor visits you and the audit follows an agreed plan. Some customers and tenders name that route explicitly. For many small and medium businesses the online route answers the same question in the supplier questionnaire with far less effort.
| Aspect | Zertify online | Classic route |
|---|---|---|
| Audit form | Online self-assessment, reviewed by SICE | On-site audit by a certification body |
| Scheduling | Start whenever you are ready | Audit dates agreed with the auditor |
| Time to certificate | Within 4 hours after passing and payment | Indicatively several weeks to months |
| Cost | Fixed yearly price, see below | Indicatively several thousand francs, depending on company size and audit days |
| Yearly follow-up | Short online re-audit | Surveillance audits by the certification body |
Which route you need depends on who is asking for the certificate. The guide on the certification routes helps you decide.
06: Price
What does ISO 42001 online cost?
The price is CHF 849 (€849) in the first year, then CHF 569 (€569) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years.
The yearly fee runs as an automatic subscription. You can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year. The certificate then ends with the paid year.
If you certify against several standards, you get 20% off for two and 30% off for three or more, also on the yearly fee. For customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein the prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT.
