ISO 42001 benefits: what the certificate does for your business

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 describes an AI management system. The certificate confirms that you operate one. Which benefit matters most depends on your position: you may build AI, sell products with AI features, or use AI tools in your own processes.

Customer confidence

You answer questions about data, responsibility and error handling with a standard and a document instead of a verbal assurance.

• ISO 42001 standard page

Customers who buy software with AI features, or who hand you their data, ask the same things. Where does the training data come from? Who is responsible when the system gets it wrong? How do you test before release? Without a certificate, your answer is a promise.

With an ISO 42001 certificate, the answer points to a recognised standard. The customer can see that you have named your role as AI provider, producer or user, set an AI policy and assessed risks. That shortens the back and forth in a sales process, especially with banks, insurers and healthcare organisations that review suppliers carefully.

The certificate covers your management system. It does not state that every model is free of errors, and you should not present it that way.

AI governance now appears in supplier questionnaires and onboarding checks. A certificate gives you an attachment instead of a free-text paragraph. Where a tender does not name ISO 42001, evaluators still have a verifiable document in front of them.

• ISO for small and medium businesses

The standard follows the usual management system structure: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, improvement. If you already work with ISO 9001 or ISO 27001, the layout is familiar. The AI-specific work sits in the requirements below.

   Provider, producer or user: the answer decides which controls apply to you. Many companies discover they are more than one.

   Set an AI policy and assign responsibilities

   Management decides what AI may be used for and who signs off. Employees stop improvising with new tools.

   Assess and treat AI risks

   Risks are listed, rated and given an owner. Problems with data quality or bias surface before a customer reports them.

   Carry out impact assessments

   You consider the effect of a system on the people it affects, for instance applicants screened by an HR tool.

   Prepare a Statement of Applicability

   You record which Annex A controls apply and why. This document is what auditors and customers ask for first.

   Training data, changes to models and live monitoring follow defined steps instead of individual habits.

Every Zertify certificate has a number and a QR code. The code on the PDF leads to a public verification page that shows the certificate is valid. A purchasing manager does not have to email you to confirm it.

Put the certificate on your website, in your offer templates and in the footer of your tender documents. Add the verification link to your email signature or to the security page of your product. The link is more persuasive than a logo, because it can be checked.

The short online re-audit each year keeps the status current. A certificate that is visibly valid today carries more weight than a scan of one from two years ago.

• How Zertify works

Zertify issues the certificate online on the basis of a self-assessment, with no on-site audit. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, the Swiss Institute of Certification and Education. SICE reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued.

The first year costs CHF 849 (€849). After that the fee is CHF 569 (€569) per year, including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription that you can cancel at any time to the end of the current year in your customer account. You do not need an account to buy.
