ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management
ISO 14001 benefits for your business
An ISO 14001 certificate answers the environmental questions in supplier questionnaires and tenders with a verifiable document. Behind it sits an environmental management system that shows where you use energy, materials and water, and which rules apply to you. Both effects are concrete: fewer open questions from customers and, often, lower running costs.
01: Customers
What customers and purchasing departments see in the certificate
Larger customers send suppliers a questionnaire. Somewhere in it is the question whether you run an environmental management system. Without a certificate you answer with a paragraph of explanation. With one you enter the certificate number and the purchasing department can check it themselves.
The same applies in a customer audit. If your environmental aspects, legal obligations and objectives are already documented, the auditor works through a system instead of asking you to produce one on the spot. That saves time on both sides.
ISO 14001:2015 follows the same high level structure as ISO 9001 and the other management system standards. Buyers who know one of them recognise the logic at once.
02: Tenders
How ISO 14001 helps in tenders and supplier lists
Some public and private tenders ask for proof of environmental management, and others award extra points for it. Whether yours do depends on the contracting authority, so read the tender documents first. Where the proof is asked for, a certificate is the shortest answer.
The table shows where the certificate is used in everyday sales work.
| Situation | What is asked | What you provide |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier questionnaire | Do you operate an environmental management system? | Certificate number and verification link |
| Tender submission | Proof of environmental management | Certificate PDF with QR code as an attachment |
| Customer audit | Evidence of environmental objectives and legal compliance | Your documented system and the current certificate |
| Framework agreement | Environmental requirements for suppliers | Certificate and the yearly confirmation |
03: Efficiency
Where an environmental management system saves money
The standard forces you to look at what your operation consumes and what it throws away. Most businesses have never listed this in one place. Once it is on paper, the expensive items become visible.
- Energy
- Heating, compressed air, cooling and machine idle times show up as separate lines. Objectives such as a lower consumption per unit produced can be set and measured.
- Materials and waste
- Scrap, packaging and disposal costs are recorded. Reducing them saves on both purchasing and disposal.
- Water
- Consumption and wastewater are assigned to processes, so leaks and wasteful steps are easier to find.
- Responsibilities
- The standard sits in management. Someone is named for each objective and each deadline, so improvements do not depend on one motivated employee.
The savings differ from business to business. A logistics company will find them in fuel and routes, a manufacturer in energy and material. The system gives you the figures to tell the difference.
04: Risk
Which risks ISO 14001 reduces
Environmental risk in a small business is rarely dramatic. It is a missed permit condition, a spill nobody planned for, or a legal change that nobody noticed. The standard addresses each of these directly.
Legal obligations are listed
You record the laws, permits and conditions that apply to your sites and check them regularly. Changes no longer reach you by accident.
Emergencies are prepared
You define in advance what happens in case of a fire, a leak or a spill, who acts and who is informed.
Performance is monitored
Measured values are compared with your objectives and reported to management. Deviations are noticed early.
Corrective action is routine
Incidents and complaints lead to a recorded action rather than to a quiet fix that is forgotten by the next quarter.
None of this replaces compliance with the law. It makes compliance something you can demonstrate.
05: Marketing
Using the certificate and the verification link
Every Zertify certificate carries a number and a QR code. Anyone can enter the number or scan the code on the public verification page and see that the certificate exists and is valid. A customer does not have to take your word for it.
Put the certificate where buyers look: the footer of your quotes, the attachment list of a tender, your website and your email signature. Link the verification page next to the logo, so a sceptical reader can check in one click.
The certificate is confirmed every year by a short online re-audit. A current certificate is therefore a statement about this year, not about a review from long ago.
06: Zertify
Getting the certificate through Zertify
You answer 34 yes/no questions online. 14 of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20, at least 14 must be yes. The assessment is free and needs no registration.
After you pass and pay, the certificate arrives within 4 hours. It is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue. There is no on-site audit. If you want to compare this with the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, the guide on certification routes sets them side by side.
The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. You can cancel at any time in your customer account, to the end of the current year.
