ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management
ISO 14001 duration: how long does certification take?
On the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, ISO 14001 usually takes several months from first preparation to certificate. With Zertify you complete the assessment in about an hour and receive the certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment. Below you see where the time goes on each route.
01: Short answer
How long does ISO 14001 certification take?
The answer depends on the route. The classic route has four phases: preparation, documentation, a stage 1 audit and a stage 2 audit. The durations given on this page are indicative ranges. Your own figures depend on company size, number of sites and how much of an environmental management system already exists.
A small business with one site and some existing records can be through the classic route in about four months. A manufacturer with several sites and no legal register can take a year. Most of that time goes into building the system, not into the audit days themselves.
02: Classic route
The four phases of the classic audit route
A certification body sends an auditor to your premises, usually twice. Between the visits you build and run the environmental management system. The ranges below are indicative.
Preparation: 2 to 8 weeks
You define the scope, list your environmental aspects (energy, water, materials, emissions, waste) and compare them with the standard. Many companies bring in a consultant for this gap analysis.
Documentation and implementation: 2 to 6 months
You write the environmental policy, set objectives, record the laws and permits that apply to you, define emergency procedures and start collecting monitoring data. The system has to be in use before the auditor arrives, so records need time to accumulate.
Stage 1 audit: 1 to 2 days on site
The auditor reviews your documentation and checks whether you are ready for the full audit. Findings from this visit need to be closed before stage 2, which adds 2 to 6 weeks.
Stage 2 audit: 2 to 5 days on site
The auditor checks in practice whether the system works: interviews, site walk, records, legal compliance. After the audit, the report and the certification decision take a further 2 to 6 weeks.
03: Timeline
ISO 14001 timeline: classic route and Zertify side by side
The table puts the phases next to each other. The classic column shows indicative ranges, the Zertify column shows the fixed process.
| Phase | Classic route with on-site audit (indicative) | Zertify route |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation and gap analysis | 2 to 8 weeks | The 34 questions show where you stand |
| Documentation and implementation | 2 to 6 months | You answer from what is already in place |
| Stage 1 audit and closing findings | 1 to 2 days on site, plus 2 to 6 weeks | No on-site audit |
| Stage 2 audit | 2 to 5 days on site | Online self-assessment, about 1 hour |
| Report and certificate | 2 to 6 weeks | Within 4 hours after passing and payment |
| Total | About 4 to 12 months | About 1 hour plus delivery within 4 hours |
04: Delays
What makes ISO 14001 take longer
Delays on the classic route rarely come from the audit itself. They come from gaps that surface late.
- Missing legal register
- Clause 6 asks you to know which environmental laws and permits apply. If nobody has listed them, this alone can take weeks.
- Scope that is too wide
- Certifying all sites and all activities at once multiplies the documentation and the audit days. A narrower scope shortens every phase.
- No operating records
- An auditor wants to see that the system has been running: monitoring results, incident logs, management review. Records cannot be produced on the day before the audit.
- Auditor availability
- Certification bodies plan their audits ahead. Waiting for a free slot between stage 1 and stage 2 can add weeks.
- Nonconformities
- If the auditor finds a gap, you correct it and prove the correction. Each round extends the calendar.
05: Zertify
How the Zertify route fits in
Zertify replaces the on-site audit with an online self-assessment of 34 yes/no questions. 14 of them are mandatory requirements of ISO 14001 and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20 questions, at least 14 need a yes. Most owners finish in about an hour.
Once you have passed and paid, the certificate arrives within 4 hours. It is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue. Your customer or purchasing department can check the certificate on the public verification page by number or QR code.
The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years and confirmed each year by that short re-audit.
