ISO 9001:2015

ISO 9001 duration: how long does certification take?

On the classic route with an on-site audit, plan for several months. With Zertify, the self-assessment takes about an hour and the certificate follows within 4 hours after you pass and pay. Below you see where the time goes on each route.

01: Short answer

How long does ISO 9001 certification take?

It depends on the route you choose. On the classic route, an on-site audit by a certification body, a small or medium business should plan for roughly six to twelve months from first preparation to certificate. This is an indicative range. Your starting point, your size and the audit calendar move it in either direction.

With Zertify, the timeline is measured in hours. You complete an online self-assessment in about an hour. After you pass and pay, the certificate is issued within 4 hours.

The sections below break down each phase, so you can plan with realistic numbers instead of guesses.

02: Classic route

The phases of the classic audit route

The classic route follows a fixed sequence. Most of the time is spent before the auditor ever arrives. The durations below are indicative ranges for a small or medium business.

  1. Preparation and gap analysis

You compare your current way of working with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and list what is missing. Indicatively, this takes one to three months.

  2. Documentation and implementation

You define the quality policy and measurable objectives, describe your processes, assess risks and opportunities, and put the procedures into daily practice. Indicatively, this takes two to six months.

  3. Internal audit and management review

You check your own system and the management reviews the results. Indicatively, this takes two to four weeks.

  4. Stage 1 audit

The certification body reviews your documentation and readiness. Indicatively, one to two days on site, followed by a report within a few weeks.

  5. Stage 2 audit and certification decision

The auditors assess how the system works in practice. Indicatively, the audit is scheduled several weeks after stage 1, takes a few days on site, and the decision follows some weeks later.

Treat all figures as indicative. A certification body will give you a quote with actual dates for your company.

03: Timeline

The table puts both routes side by side. The classic route figures are indicative and vary by company and certification body.

04: Time drivers

What makes ISO 9001 certification faster or slower

Two companies of the same size can end up with very different timelines. These factors matter most on the classic route.

Existing documentation
If your processes, responsibilities and quality objectives are already written down, the documentation phase is short. If they live in people's heads, it takes longer.
Company size and sites
More employees, more processes and more locations mean more to define, train and audit.
Management time
Leadership is a core requirement of the standard. Projects slow down when the owner or manager cannot set aside regular time.
Findings from the audits
Nonconformities found during an audit must be corrected before the decision. Each correction round adds time.
Auditor availability
Certification bodies work with calendars. The wait between stage 1, stage 2 and the final decision is often outside your control.

05: Zertify route

The Zertify route: assessment in about an hour

Zertify issues ISO 9001:2015 certificates based on an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit and no waiting for an audit date. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, the Swiss Institute of Certification and Education, and SICE reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued.

  1. Start the self-assessment

It is free and online. You can begin at any time.

  2. Answer 30 yes/no questions

This takes about an hour, depending on how much you want to check in your own records.

  3. Reach 20 of 30 points

That is the pass threshold. If you fall short, you know which areas to improve.

  4. Pay and receive your certificate

After you pass and pay, the certificate is issued within 4 hours. The price is CHF 599 (€599) in the first year, then CHF 399 (€399) per year including the online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Every certificate can be verified publicly by its number and QR code. Your customers and partners can confirm it in seconds.

06: Your choice

Which route fits your timeline?

Choose by what you need. If your tender, customer or contract requires an on-site audit by a certification body, plan for the months described above. If you need a verifiable ISO 9001 certificate quickly, at a known price and without an audit visit, the online route fits.

Either way, it helps to know the requirements. They cover the context of your organisation, quality policy and objectives, risks and opportunities, process control, resources and competence, and continual improvement. A business that already works this way moves faster on any route.

The guides below compare the routes in detail, including cost and the difference between certification with and without an on-site audit.
