ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management
ISO 9001 for healthcare: certified online, without an on-site audit
ISO 9001 shows that your clinical support and administrative processes are defined, controlled and improved. With Zertify you answer 30 yes/no questions online and pass with 20 correct answers. You receive your certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.
01: Demand
Why healthcare customers and partners ask for ISO 9001
Healthcare organisations work with many parties: patients, referring practitioners, hospitals, insurers, suppliers and public purchasers. Each of them wants to know that your work is done in a repeatable way and that mistakes are found and corrected. ISO 9001 gives all of them a common reference.
Some tenders, framework agreements and partner questionnaires ask for a quality management certificate. Read the exact wording of each document, because requirements differ. A valid ISO 9001 certificate answers the quality management question quickly and in a form that anyone can verify.
The certificate does not prove clinical results. It shows that you run a management system: responsibilities are clear, processes are documented, risks are considered and improvement is part of the routine. For a practice, care service, laboratory, therapy centre or medical supplier, that is often what a buyer wants to see.
02: Processes and risks
Typical healthcare processes and the risks ISO 9001 addresses
ISO 9001 is not written for one industry. It asks you to look at your own processes and risks. In healthcare, the same few areas come up again and again.
| Typical process | Typical risk | What ISO 9001 asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Patient registration and appointments | Wrong or missing data, double bookings, long waiting times | Defined process, clear responsibilities, monitoring (clauses 8 and 9) |
| Handover between staff or shifts | Information lost between colleagues | Documented procedure and controlled information (clauses 7 and 8) |
| Procurement of materials and devices | Unreliable supplier, wrong or late delivery | Evaluation and control of external providers (clause 8) |
| Training and onboarding of staff | Tasks done by people without the right skills | Competence, awareness and records (clause 7) |
| Complaints and incident reports | Problems noted but not followed up | Corrective action and continual improvement (clause 10) |
Each row follows the same logic: name the process, name what can go wrong, decide what you do about it and check that it works.
03: Key terms
The key ideas of ISO 9001, explained with healthcare examples
The standard uses a few terms that sound abstract. Here is what they mean in a healthcare setting.
- Context of the organisation
- Who depends on you and what shapes your work. For a physiotherapy practice this includes patients, referring doctors, insurers, staff and the premises.
- Quality policy and objectives
- A short statement of intent plus targets you can measure. Example: a care service aims to answer every enquiry within one working day.
- Risks and opportunities
- Things that could disturb your service or help it. Example: a key employee leaves, or a new online booking tool shortens waiting times.
- Process control
- Written, known steps for recurring work. Example: how a dental practice prepares, documents and follows up a patient appointment.
- Competence
- Proof that people can do what their role requires. Example: a training record for every new member of a laboratory team.
- Continual improvement
- A habit of learning from feedback and errors. Example: a monthly team meeting that reviews complaints and decides on one change.
04: In practice
How a healthcare business meets the key requirements
You do not need a large quality department. A small team can meet the requirements with a few clear steps.
Describe your context
Write one page on your services, your patients or clients, your partners and the expectations they have. Update it once a year.
Set a policy and three to five objectives
Choose targets you can count, such as response time to enquiries, share of appointments kept or open complaints.
Map your core processes
Draw the path from first contact to follow-up. Mark who is responsible for each step and where mistakes tend to happen.
Record risks and actions
List what could go wrong, rate it and note one action per risk. A simple table is enough.
Keep competence records
Store job descriptions, training dates and instructions in one place so that anyone can see who is qualified for which task.
Review and improve
Look at your objectives, complaints and feedback at least once a year. Decide what to change and write it down.
These steps follow the structure of the standard: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.
05: With Zertify
Get your ISO 9001 certificate for healthcare with Zertify
Zertify is an online platform for ISO certificates. You complete a self-assessment with 30 yes/no questions. If you reach 20 of 30, you can pay and receive your certificate within 4 hours. G6 Agency AG issues it under licence from SICE (Swiss Institute of Certification and Education), and SICE reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued.
The price is CHF 599 (€599) in the first year, then CHF 399 (€399) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years and is confirmed each year by a short online re-audit. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. You do not need an account to buy.
The subscription renews automatically each year. You can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year. If you also need another standard, a multi-standard discount applies: 20% for 2 standards and 30% for 3 or more, also on the yearly fee.
Every certificate can be verified publicly by its number and QR code. Partners, buyers and patients can check it in seconds.
06: Choosing a route
What to check before you choose your certification route
Zertify is based on an online self-assessment and has no on-site audit. This makes it fast and predictable. The classic route is an on-site audit by a certification body. It usually takes more time and costs more, and it suits some tenders better than others.
Before you decide, check what your customer or tender document asks for. If it only requires an ISO 9001 certificate, a verifiable online certificate may be enough. If it names a specific route, follow that wording. Our guide compares the routes side by side.
Keep in mind that ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system. It does not replace professional authorisations or any other requirements that apply to your activity. Check those separately with the competent body.
