ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management
ISO 9001 cost: what you pay and what you can avoid
On the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, ISO 9001 typically costs several thousand francs in the first year, plus recurring fees. With Zertify, the price is CHF 599 (€599) in the first year, then CHF 399 (€399) per year including the online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. You take an online self-assessment and receive your certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.
01: Overview
What ISO 9001 certification costs in total
There is no single price for ISO 9001. The total is made up of four blocks: the fees of the certification body, optional consulting, your own internal time, and recurring costs in the years after the first certificate.
Many owners only look at the audit offer. That is the most visible item, but not always the largest. Internal effort and annual fees often decide whether the project stays affordable.
Company size, number of sites, number of processes and the provider you choose all influence the result. The ranges in this guide are indicative only. They are not quotes. Always ask for a written offer before you commit.
02: Classic route
ISO 9001 cost on the classic route with an on-site audit
The classic route means an on-site audit by a certification body. The auditor visits your company, reviews your documented system and interviews your staff. You pay for the auditor's time, and usually for travel as well.
For a small or medium business, the fee for the initial audit is indicatively in the range of CHF 3,000 to 8,000. A larger headcount, several locations or complex processes push the figure up.
- Offer and audit planning
- The body calculates audit days from your size and scope. More employees and sites mean more days.
- Initial certification audit
- This is the main fee. It covers the auditor's days on site and the audit report.
- Travel and expenses
- Some providers include them, others bill them separately. Check this in the offer.
- Certificate issue
- Once the audit is passed, the certificate is issued. Some providers charge an additional administration fee.
03: Consulting and effort
Consulting costs and the internal effort behind ISO 9001
Many companies hire a consultant to build the quality management system. Indicatively, this costs between CHF 5,000 and 20,000, depending on scope and support level. You can also do the work yourself, but then it costs internal time.
Internal effort is the cost most often underestimated. For a small company, it is indicatively 10 to 40 working days, spread over several months. The work follows the structure of the standard:
Context (clause 4)
Describe your organisation, your interested parties and the scope of your quality management system.
Leadership and planning (clauses 5 and 6)
Write a quality policy, set measurable objectives and assess risks and opportunities.
Support and operation (clauses 7 and 8)
Define and control your processes. Make sure resources and competence are in place.
Evaluation and improvement (clauses 9 and 10)
Monitor performance, review results and improve continually.
Management time is part of this. Owners and managers must take part in the policy, objectives and reviews. That time has a real cost, even if no invoice is issued.
04: Recurring costs
Recurring ISO 9001 costs after the first certificate
On the classic route, the first certificate is not the end of the spending. The certification body returns to audit you again, and you must keep the system alive between visits.
Surveillance audits usually take place every year. Indicatively, they cost CHF 1,500 to 4,000 per audit. After three years, recertification is due. Its fee is indicatively CHF 3,000 to 7,000, often lower than the first audit but still significant.
Add the internal work of keeping records current, running internal reviews and preparing each visit. Over a three-year cycle, recurring items can add up to more than the initial audit.
05: Comparison

| After 3 years | Recertification, indicatively CHF 3,000 to 7,000 | CHF 399 (€399) per year, as in every following year |
| Time to certificate | Typically several months | Within 4 hours after passing and payment |
06: Zertify
The alternative: ISO 9001 with Zertify
Zertify certificates are based on an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit and no consultant to hire. You answer 30 yes/no questions about how your company manages quality. If you reach 20 of 30, you pass.
After you pass and pay, SICE (Swiss Institute of Certification and Education) reviews your assessment and the certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE within 4 hours. It costs CHF 599 (€599) in the first year, then CHF 399 (€399) per year including the short online re-audit. It is valid for 3 years, is confirmed every year, and the yearly subscription can be cancelled at any time for the end of the year.
Every certificate can be verified publicly on zertify.ch by its number and QR code. Customers and partners can check it in seconds. The price is known before you start, so you can plan your budget with confidence.
