ISO 9001:2015 for food businesses

ISO 9001 for food industry: certified online

Retailers, wholesalers and tenders in the food sector often ask suppliers for ISO 9001. With Zertify you take a self-assessment of 30 yes/no questions and receive your certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment. It costs 599 CHF in the first year, then 399 CHF per year including the online re-audit.

01: Demand

Why food buyers ask for ISO 9001

Food is a business of repeatability. A customer who orders the same product every week expects the same quality, the same labelling and the same delivery. Buyers cannot inspect every producer themselves. They look for proof that a supplier works with defined processes.

ISO 9001:2015 is the world's leading standard for quality management systems. It does not prescribe how to bake, brew, process or pack. It requires that you define your processes, control them, measure results and improve. That is why it fits bakeries, dairies, meat processors, beverage makers, food traders and caterers alike.

In practice the request appears in three places: supplier questionnaires from retailers and wholesalers, tenders from canteens, hospitals and other public institutions, and partner talks with larger manufacturers who want to onboard you as a supplier. A certificate with a public verification number answers the question in one line.

02: Risks

Typical food processes and risks the standard addresses

ISO 9001 asks you to look at your own operation and manage what can go wrong. In a food business the same themes come up again and again.

Batch traceability
Knowing which raw material lots went into which finished batch and to which customer it was delivered. Without records, a complaint becomes a guessing game.
Supplier approval
Choosing and reviewing suppliers of ingredients and packaging, and keeping a list of who is approved and why.
Storage and temperature control
Defined storage conditions, regular checks and a recorded reaction when a value is out of range.
Allergen information and labelling
Making sure recipe changes, product changeovers and label texts stay consistent, so the customer receives correct information.
Cleaning and changeover routines
Written routines, named responsibilities and proof that the work was done before production starts.
Complaints and withdrawals
A clear path from customer complaint to cause, correction and lesson learned, including who decides when a product is taken back.

ISO 9001 gives these topics a common frame: identify the risk, assign an owner, define the control, keep evidence, review the result.

03: Requirements

How a food company meets the key requirements

The standard follows the high level structure used across ISO management standards. The table shows what each main clause can look like in a small or medium food business.

10 ImprovementNonconformity and continual improvementA labelling error leads to a corrected template and a second-person check before printing.

04: Preparation

Prepare in five steps before the self-assessment

You do not need a large project. A food business that already works in an orderly way usually has most of the material. The aim is to know where you stand.

  1. Write down your scope

Which products, sites and activities should the certificate cover?

  2. Describe your core processes

From goods receipt to dispatch, in short steps with responsible persons. A simple flow chart is enough.

  3. Collect existing records

Temperature logs, cleaning lists, batch records, supplier lists, training confirmations and complaint notes.

  4. Set quality objectives

Choose two or three figures you can measure, such as complaints, returns or on-time delivery.

  5. Name an owner

One person keeps the documents current and prepares the yearly review.

05: With Zertify

Get ISO 9001 certified quickly with Zertify

Zertify is built for businesses that want a certificate without a long project. You answer 30 yes/no questions online. The pass threshold is 20 of 30. SICE, the Swiss Institute of Certification and Education, reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, within 4 hours after passing and payment.

There is no on-site audit. The certificate rests on your online self-assessment. Every certificate can be verified publicly by number and QR code, so a buyer can check it in seconds. The certificate is valid for 3 years and confirmed each year by a short online re-audit.

The price is 599 CHF (599 EUR) in the first year, then 399 CHF (399 EUR) per year including the yearly online re-audit. It is an automatic yearly subscription. You can cancel at any time to the end of the current year in your customer account. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year. For customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein the prices include 8.1% VAT. You do not need an account to buy.

If your company also needs another standard, a multi-standard discount applies: 20% for 2 standards and 30% for 3 or more, also on the yearly fee.

06: Choosing a route

What the certificate covers and how to choose your route

ISO 9001 certifies your quality management system. It shows that you manage processes, risks and improvement in a structured way. It is not a substitute for the hygiene and product safety duties that apply to your food business. Those remain your responsibility, and the quality system is a good place to organise the records for them.

Some customers name a specific route in their requirements. Ask your buyer what they expect. If they simply want a verifiable ISO 9001 certificate, an online route may be enough. If they require an on-site audit by a certification body, you will need the classic route. The guide on certification routes helps you compare both.
