ISO 45001 benefits: what the certificate does for your business
An ISO 45001 certificate answers the health and safety questions in supplier questionnaires, tenders and customer audits with a verifiable document. Inside the business, the standard pushes you to find hazards before an accident happens. This page lists the concrete gains and where each one shows up.
01: Overview
What an ISO 45001 certificate gives your business
ISO 45001 sets the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. The certificate states that your business works to those requirements: hazards are identified in advance, workers have a say, and senior management carries the responsibility. The benefits fall into five areas.
A document for customers
Health and safety questions in supplier questionnaires get a numbered certificate as the answer instead of a page of explanations.
Access to tenders
Where a tender asks for a health and safety management certificate, you can submit one and are not ruled out at the first check.
Fewer incidents
The standard requires hazard assessment, controls and incident investigation. Accidents and near misses become inputs for action, not just events.
Clear responsibilities
The policy, the roles and the consultation of workers are written down. Everyone knows who decides what.
Material for marketing
The certificate PDF carries a QR code. Anyone can scan it and see that the certificate is real.
02: Customers
Customer trust starts with the supplier questionnaire
If your people work on a customer's site, the customer carries part of the risk. That is why purchasing departments in manufacturing, construction, logistics and the chemical industry ask contractors how they manage health and safety. A questionnaire with ten free-text fields takes time to fill in and time to read. A certificate with a number takes neither.
The same applies to a customer audit. Instead of explaining your approach from scratch, you can point to the elements the standard requires: a health and safety policy, a hazard assessment, defined emergency procedures, a way to follow up incidents. The auditor still asks questions, but they start from a shared reference.
03: Tenders
ISO 45001 benefits in tenders and purchasing
Tender documents differ. Some ask for a certificate, some only for proof of a safety concept, some award points for either. The table shows where a certificate helps in practice.
| Situation | What the buyer wants to see | What the certificate provides |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier questionnaire | Proof of a health and safety management system | Certificate number and PDF as an attachment |
| Public or private tender | A certificate or equivalent evidence in the bid documents | A document you can add to the bid within minutes |
| Prequalification of contractors | Evidence that hazards on site are managed | A verifiable record the purchasing department can check itself |
| Customer audit | Policy, hazard assessment, emergency planning | A common reference to the requirements of the standard |
Read the tender documents closely. If a call specifies a certain type of certification body or audit, check that before you apply.
04: Operations
Fewer incidents and clearer responsibilities inside the business
The certificate is the visible result. The gain inside the business comes from the requirements behind it. A business that meets them handles hazards differently from one that reacts after an accident.
- Hazard identification
- You assess hazards at workplaces and in tasks before someone gets hurt. Machines, chemicals, lifting, vehicles and working at height all get a look.
- Hierarchy of controls
- The standard asks you to remove a hazard first, then substitute it, then contain it technically. Personal protective equipment comes last, not first.
- Worker consultation
- The people who do the work know where it goes wrong. The standard requires you to ask them and to act on what they say.
- Emergency preparedness
- Fire, spills, injuries on site: you plan the response in advance and check that people know it.
- Incident investigation
- Every incident leads to a cause and an action, so the same accident does not happen twice.
Leadership is part of this. Under clause 5, senior management owns health and safety. The topic moves from the site foreman's desk to the management table, where budgets are decided.
05: Marketing
Using the certificate and the verification link
A certificate only helps if buyers see it. Attach the PDF to quotes and tender submissions. Add the certificate number to your website, your email signature and your company profile in supplier portals.
Every Zertify certificate has a public verification page, reachable by certificate number or by the QR code on the PDF. A purchasing manager who doubts a document does not have to write to you. They scan the code and see the result. This also protects you, because a certificate that can be checked is harder to question.
06: Zertify
How Zertify fits in
Zertify issues the certificate on the basis of an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit. For ISO 45001 the assessment has 34 yes/no questions. Fourteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20, at least 14 must be yes. G6 Agency AG issues the certificate under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue.
The certificate arrives within 4 hours after you pass and pay. It costs CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years and is confirmed each year by that short re-audit. You can start the self-assessment without registration.
