ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management
Is ISO 14001 mandatory for your business?
No law requires a business to hold an ISO 14001 certificate. In practice, a customer, a tender or a supplier questionnaire can make it a condition. If that is your situation, you can complete the self-assessment online and receive the certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.
01: Short answer
Is ISO 14001 legally required?
No. ISO 14001:2015 is published by an international standards body and carries no legal force of its own. Certification against it is generally voluntary, in Switzerland as well as in Germany, Austria and France.
That does not release you from environmental rules. The laws and permits that apply to your site, your waste or your emissions apply whether you hold a certificate or not. ISO 14001 asks you to record those obligations and to show that you follow them. That is a different thing from being told to certify.
02: Practical pressure
When does ISO 14001 become required in practice?
The requirement comes from the buyer, not from the legislator. It shows up in one of four places.
- Supplier questionnaire
- A large customer sends a form with a line such as 'Do you hold ISO 14001?'. A no can cost you the listing as an approved supplier.
- Tender
- Public and private tenders can name an environmental management certificate as a selection criterion or as proof of suitability. Without it, your bid may be set aside before anyone reads the price.
- Customer audit
- An auditor from your customer asks how you handle environmental aspects, waste and emergencies. A certificate answers many of those questions before the visit.
- Industry expectation
- In manufacturing, logistics, construction, energy, waste management and recycling, buyers expect an environmental management system as a matter of course. The one supplier without it stands out.
03: Law or contract
What is binding and what is voluntary?
Three different sources get mixed up in this discussion. Only one of them is law.
| Source | Binding on you? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental law and permits | Yes, always | Conditions in a permit for your site or your waste handling |
| ISO 14001:2015 | No, voluntary | The standard itself, unless someone requires it |
| Customer contract or purchasing terms | Yes, once you sign | A clause requiring a valid ISO 14001 certificate |
| Tender conditions | Yes, for that bid | A certificate named as proof of suitability |
So the question is rarely whether the law demands ISO 14001. It is whether the contract or tender in front of you does.
04: Customer request
What to do when a customer asks for ISO 14001
A request often arrives with a deadline attached. These steps keep you from losing time on the wrong route.
Read the exact wording
Some buyers ask for 'ISO 14001 certified', others for 'an environmental management system in line with ISO 14001'. These are different requests.
Ask which proof is accepted
Ask the purchasing department whether a certificate with a public verification page is enough, or whether they require an on-site audit by a certification body. Get the answer in writing.
Work back from the deadline
Quotes, tenders and supplier onboarding all have dates. Plan the route that fits the earliest one.
Pick the route
If the customer accepts an online-assessed certificate, you can have it within hours. If not, plan for the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body.
Send the proof
Attach the PDF with its number and QR code to your reply. The buyer checks it on the public verification page.
05: With Zertify
How to get ISO 14001 certified quickly with Zertify
Zertify issues the ISO 14001:2015 certificate on the basis of an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit. The assessment has 34 yes/no questions. Fourteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20, at least 14 must be yes.
SICE reviews every assessment. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE and arrives within 4 hours after you pass and pay. It is valid for 3 years and is confirmed each year by a short online re-audit.
The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the online re-audit. The subscription renews automatically. You cancel it in your customer account, to the end of the current year, and the certificate then ends with the paid year. You do not need an account to buy.
Every certificate can be looked up by number or QR code on the public verification page, which is what a purchasing department will want to see.
06: No request yet
Should you certify before anyone asks?
If no customer asks, you have no obligation. Waiting is a reasonable choice, and the process is short enough to start when a request arrives.
There are still reasons to move early. A quote that carries a certificate number passes through purchasing without a side discussion. The work behind the standard, listing where you use energy, materials and water and where waste arises, often shows where you can save money as well.
