ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management

ISO 14001 for construction companies

Some tenders and general contractors ask their subcontractors for proof of an environmental management system. ISO 14001 is that proof. With Zertify you answer 34 yes/no questions online and receive the certificate within 4 hours of passing and payment.

01: Demand

Why do tenders and clients ask for ISO 14001 in construction?

Building work happens in the open, next to neighbours, watercourses and public roads. Excavation, concrete, diesel and demolition waste all leave traces if nobody manages them. A client who commissions a building carries part of that risk, so the purchasing department puts a question into the supplier questionnaire: do you run an environmental management system?

An ISO 14001 certificate answers that question with a certificate number instead of a page of text. Some tenders list it as a requirement. Others award points for it in the award criteria. General contractors often pass the same requirement down to their subcontractors, and developers with their own environmental targets do the same. Without a certificate, a small firm may face a long questionnaire or drop off a shortlist.

Read the exact wording in each tender document. It tells you whether a certificate is mandatory, scored or merely welcome.

02: Site risks

Which construction processes does ISO 14001 cover?

The standard does not prescribe measures. It asks you to find the environmental aspects of your own work, judge which ones matter most, and control them. For a construction company, the list usually starts on the site itself.

Dust and noise
Demolition, cutting and concrete work disturb neighbours. Typical controls are watering, screening and fixed working hours.
Fuel and oil
Diesel tanks and hydraulic oil in excavators can reach soil and groundwater. Drip trays, spill kits and a defined refuelling area reduce the risk.
Construction waste
Excavated material, mixed demolition waste, packaging and formwork residues. Sorting at the source and recorded disposal routes keep it traceable.
Washwater and cement slurry
Water from cleaning mixers and tools is alkaline and must not enter the drains. A settling basin on site solves most of it.
Machine and vehicle emissions
Idling engines, long transport distances and poorly maintained machines. Route planning and maintenance schedules address them.
Energy and materials
Site cabin heating, generators and over-ordered material. Tracking consumption per site shows where waste arises.

03: Requirements

How does a construction company meet the key requirements?

Clause 6 of the standard covers planning, clause 8 covers operation, clause 9 covers performance evaluation. In a building firm, each requirement turns into a few concrete documents and routines.

Key requirements of ISO 14001 and what they look like in a construction company
RequirementIn practice
Environmental aspects and impactsA list per type of work (excavation, building shell, finishing, demolition) with the aspect, its impact and a rating of which ones are significant.
Compliance obligationsA register of permits and the conditions attached to each building permit, with a named person who checks them.
Environmental policyOne page signed by management, posted in the office and in the site cabin, with a commitment to improve.
Objectives and actionsFor example a higher share of sorted waste or lower diesel use per site, each with an owner and a deadline.
Emergency preparednessSpill kit location, who to call if oil reaches a drain, a contact list on the site noticeboard, one drill per year.
Monitoring and reportingWaste slips and fuel consumption per site, reviewed by management once a year.

04: Preparation

What should you prepare before the self-assessment?

A building firm does not need an environmental department. The standard belongs in management, so the owner or managing director takes responsibility and assigns tasks to the site managers. The documentation stays proportionate: a register, a policy, a few records.

  1. List your types of work

Note which activities you carry out and where: new builds, renovation, civil engineering, demolition.

  2. Collect current permit conditions

Pull the environmental conditions out of the permits for your running projects and put them in one register.

  3. Name the responsible people

Decide who checks waste handling, fuel storage and emergency contacts on each site.

  4. Set two or three objectives

Pick targets you can measure with data you already have, such as waste slips and fuel invoices.

  5. Gather existing records

Disposal receipts, delivery notes, maintenance logs and training notes often cover more than you expect.

05: Zertify

How do you get ISO 14001 with Zertify?

You start with the self-assessment: 34 yes/no questions for this standard. 14 of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Among the other 20, you need at least 14 yes answers to pass. No account is needed to buy. G6 Agency AG issues the certificate under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before it is issued. It arrives within 4 hours of passing and payment.

The PDF carries a certificate number and a QR code. A client or purchasing department can check both on the public verification page, without calling you.

The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein pay prices including 8.1% VAT. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription. You can cancel it at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year, and the certificate ends with the paid year. If you add a second standard such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001, you get 20% off, and 30% from three standards, also on the yearly fee.

06: Routes

Zertify or the classic route with an on-site audit?

The classic route is an on-site audit by a certification body. Auditors visit your office and sites, and you schedule the visit around running projects. The Zertify certificate rests on an online self-assessment instead. There is no on-site audit, and a short online re-audit confirms it every year.

Before you choose, ask the client's purchasing department or check the tender text for the proof they accept. If the document only asks for an ISO 14001 certificate that can be verified, the online route covers it. If it names a specific audit type, follow that wording.
