ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management

ISO 50001 for logistics: the energy certificate your customers ask for

Tenders and supplier questionnaires in logistics ask how you manage fuel, electricity and heating. An ISO 50001 certificate answers that with a document the purchasing department can verify. You can get it online, through a self-assessment, without an on-site audit.

01: Demand

Why do customers and tenders ask for ISO 50001 in logistics?

Transport and warehousing run on fuel and electricity. For a freight forwarder, a contract logistics provider or a courier, energy is one of the largest cost lines after wages and vehicles. A shipper that buys transport also buys the emissions that come with it, and its own sustainability reporting depends on the figures you deliver.

So the question turns up in supplier questionnaires, in tender documents and in customer audits. The purchasing department wants to see that you measure energy use, know your main consumers and work towards targets. A certificate answers all of that in one document, with a number and a QR code that anyone can check on a public verification page.

The standard does not prescribe a level of consumption. It requires that you know your energy use, manage it and improve it from year to year.

02: Energy uses

Where does a logistics company use energy?

An energy management system starts with an honest list of consumers. In logistics the list is usually short, and a few items carry most of the consumption.

Vehicle fleet
Diesel, gas or electric trucks and vans. Litres or kWh per 100 km, or per delivery, are the natural indicators.
Warehouse lighting
Large halls lit through several shifts. LED retrofits and presence sensors show up directly on the electricity meter.
Heating and ventilation
Dock doors left open during loading let heat out of the hall. Door discipline and heating zones belong in the energy review.
Cold storage
Refrigerated and frozen rooms run around the clock. Door seals, set temperatures and defrost cycles decide the consumption.
Forklifts and charging
Battery charging at peak hours raises the load on the site connection. Charging schedules can be changed without new equipment.
Sorting and conveyor systems
Belts and sorters that keep running between parcel waves use energy without moving goods.

Not every item is significant for every company. The energy review decides which ones are, based on your own meter and fuel data.

03: Requirements

How does a logistics company meet the key requirements?

The requirements of ISO 50001 sit mainly in the planning and performance evaluation clauses (6 and 9). The table shows what each of them can look like in a logistics business.

Key requirements of ISO 50001 and an example for each in logistics
RequirementExample in a logistics company
Energy baselineTwelve months of fuel card data plus electricity and heating readings per site, kept as the reference for later comparison.
Significant energy usesFleet, cold storage and hall lighting ranked by share of total consumption. The top items become the focus.
Energy performance indicatorsLitres per 100 km, kWh per pallet position, kWh per parcel handled.
Objectives and action plansCut truck idling time, replace the lighting in hall 2 by a fixed date, each action with an owner and a budget.
ProcurementEnergy consumption counts as a criterion when buying vehicles, forklifts and refrigeration units.
Monitoring and improvementThe site manager reviews meter and fuel data every month. Deviations lead to actions, and management reviews the results once a year.

04: Getting started

What does the first year of work look like?

Most logistics companies already hold the data they need. It sits in fuel invoices, meter readings and telematics reports. The task is to bring it together and give it an owner.

  1. Collect the data

Gather fuel invoices, electricity and heating bills and, where available, telematics reports for each site and for the fleet.

  2. Name the main consumers

Rank them by share. Fleet and cold storage usually come first, but your own figures decide.

  3. Choose indicators you can already measure

A ratio you can calculate today is worth more than a perfect one you cannot.

  4. Set two or three objectives

Give each one an owner, a deadline and a budget.

  5. Fix the routine

Write down who reads which meter, how often, and when management looks at the results.

The self-assessment questions follow the same logic, so this preparation is also the preparation for the certificate.

05: With Zertify

How do you get ISO 50001 with Zertify?

You answer 32 yes/no questions online. Thirteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 19, at least 13 must be yes. After you pass and pay, the certificate arrives within 4 hours. No account is needed to buy.

The certificate is based on your self-assessment, not on an on-site audit. It is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue. Every certificate can be verified publicly by number and QR code, and a short online re-audit each year confirms it.

The price is CHF 749 (€749) in the first year, then CHF 499 (€499) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription that you can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year.

The classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body is the other option. The guide below compares the two.
