ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management

ISO 50001 for chemicals and pharma

Purchasing departments in chemicals and pharma ask suppliers how they manage energy. ISO 50001 is the standard behind that question: a documented energy management system with a baseline, targets and a yearly review. With Zertify you answer 32 questions online and receive the certificate within 4 hours of passing and payment.

01: Demand

Why customers in chemicals and pharma ask for ISO 50001

Chemical and pharmaceutical sites use energy around the clock. Reactors are heated and cooled, solvents are distilled, cleanrooms are ventilated. Energy is a large line in the cost of every batch, and buyers know it.

The question reaches you in several forms. A supplier questionnaire from a group purchasing department asks how energy data is collected and who is responsible for it. A tender for contract manufacturing asks for evidence of an energy management system. A customer audit asks what you have done to cut consumption since last year. A certificate against ISO 50001 answers all three with one document that the buyer can file and check.

Not every customer asks for the same proof. Read the wording of the questionnaire or tender first. Some documents expect the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, others ask only for a valid certificate against the standard.

02: Energy uses

Where energy goes at a chemical or pharma site

ISO 50001 asks you to identify your significant energy uses. In this industry the same few areas come up again and again. Your own meter data decides which of them matter most at your site.

Steam and process heat
Boilers, steam networks and heating of reactors. Losses in condensate return and poorly insulated lines are a common first finding.
Cooling and refrigeration
Chillers and cooling water for exothermic reactions, crystallisation and cold storage of intermediates or finished products.
Cleanroom ventilation
Air handling units that run at full air change rates even when a room is idle between campaigns.
Compressed air and vacuum
Compressors and vacuum pumps serving filling lines and reactors. Leaks and oversized pressure settings raise the load without anyone noticing.
Drying and solvent recovery
Dryers, distillation columns and recovery units that run for long cycles and consume heat in large amounts.
Purified water and utilities
Production and circulation of purified water, plus the pumps and heat exchangers around it.

03: Requirements

How a plant meets the key requirements of ISO 50001

The standard follows the usual structure from context (clause 4) to improvement (clause 10). The table shows what its key requirements look like in a chemical or pharmaceutical plant.

Key requirements of ISO 50001 and an example from this industry
RequirementExample in a chemical or pharma plant
Establish an energy baselineTwelve months of electricity, steam and gas consumption from meters and invoices, split by building or production area.
Identify significant energy usesRanking of consumers shows that steam, chillers and cleanroom air handling account for most of the load.
Define energy performance indicatorskWh of steam per tonne of product, or kWh per batch, so that a busy month is not mistaken for a wasteful one.
Set energy objectives and action plansReduce air change rates in unused cleanrooms, repair compressed air leaks, with an owner and a date for each action.
Procure energy-efficient products and servicesEfficiency class and expected running hours become criteria when ordering a new pump, compressor or chiller.
Monitor and improve energy performanceMonthly review of the indicators by the site manager, with deviations followed up in the next action plan.

04: Preparation

What to prepare before you answer the questions

Energy management in a regulated production environment has one practical constraint: you cannot change equipment or settings freely. That is no obstacle to the standard. An action that touches a validated process goes through your normal change control, and the action plan says so.

  1. Collect a year of consumption data

Take meter readings and supplier invoices for electricity, gas, heating oil and district heat. Gaps are fine at the start, but note where they are.

  2. Rank the consumers

List the main plants and utilities with their approximate share of consumption. This gives you the significant energy uses.

  3. Choose indicators that match your output

Relate energy to tonnes, batches or operating hours. A site with several products may need one indicator per area.

  4. Write down two or three actions

Each action gets an owner, a date and an expected effect. Management signs off the energy policy that frames them.

05: Zertify

Getting the ISO 50001 certificate with Zertify

Zertify issues the certificate on the basis of an online self-assessment, without an on-site audit. The assessment has 32 yes/no questions. Thirteen are mandatory requirements of the standard and all of them must be answered yes. Of the other 19 questions, at least 13 need a yes. SICE reviews every assessment. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE and reaches you within 4 hours after passing and payment.

Each certificate carries a number and a QR code on the PDF. A buyer who scans it lands on the public verification page. A short online re-audit every year confirms that the certificate is still current.

The price is CHF 749 (€749) in the first year, then CHF 499 (€499) per year including the online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. It is an automatic yearly subscription that you can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year; the certificate then ends with the paid year. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. You do not need an account to buy. If you also certify a second or third standard, a discount of 20% or 30% applies, including the yearly fee.
