ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management
Is ISO 50001 mandatory for your business?
ISO 50001 is a voluntary standard. No one has to certify just because the standard exists. It still becomes a requirement in practice when a customer, a tender or a purchasing department asks for the certificate, and then you need it quickly.
01: Short answer
Is ISO 50001 mandatory?
No. ISO 50001:2018 is a management standard published by ISO, and certification against it is a decision each company takes for itself. The standard describes how to build an energy management system (EnMS): you measure your energy use, find the big consumers and keep improving.
This page is about certification, not about legal duties. Rules on energy use that apply to your sector or location are a separate subject. Ask your authority or your energy advisor about those. They do not turn the ISO certificate itself into an obligation.
02: In practice
When does ISO 50001 become a requirement in practice?
The pressure rarely comes from the standard. It comes from the other side of the table. These are the situations where a company without the certificate starts losing time or orders.
- A customer asks for it
- A supplier questionnaire contains the line "Do you hold ISO 50001?" and your answer decides whether you stay on the approved supplier list.
- A tender names it
- Some tender documents list an energy management certificate as a selection or award criterion. Read the criteria early, because the deadline for proof is fixed.
- A group sets supply chain rules
- Larger companies with their own energy or emission targets pass requirements down to their suppliers. Your certificate then becomes part of their reporting.
- The industry expects it
- In energy-intensive manufacturing, building services and logistics, competitors with a certificate set the benchmark. Buyers compare you against them.
- A customer audit finds a gap
- During an audit, a customer may ask how you manage energy performance. A certificate with a verifiable number answers that question quickly.
03: Overview
What buyers ask for and what you can show
The request is usually phrased in one of three ways. The table shows what each one means for you.
| Request | Where it appears | What you hand over |
|---|---|---|
| Valid ISO 50001 certificate | Tender documents, framework agreements | Certificate PDF with number and QR code |
| Evidence of an energy management system | Supplier questionnaire, customer audit | Certificate plus your answers on baseline, significant energy uses and EnPIs |
| Commitment to improve energy performance | Supplier code of conduct, sustainability annex | Certificate and the yearly confirmation of the online re-audit |
If the request only says "certificate", ask the buyer whether an online self-assessment route is acceptable before you start.
04: Customer request
A customer asks for ISO 50001: what to do this week
A deadline of days or a few weeks is normal in purchasing. This order of work keeps it manageable.
Read the exact wording
Find out whether the customer wants the certificate itself, a named certification route or only proof of an energy management system.
Check the deadline for proof
Note the date by which the certificate must be in the customer's hands, and work backwards from it.
Gather your energy data
Collect your consumption figures, your largest energy users and any objectives you have already set. The self-assessment asks about exactly these points.
Answer the self-assessment honestly
Answer each question according to what your company does today. Where the answer is no, close the gap first and then answer again.
Send the certificate and the verification link
Your buyer can check the certificate number or the QR code on a public verification page, without calling you.
05: With Zertify
How Zertify gets you certified for ISO 50001
You answer 32 yes/no questions online. 13 of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 19 questions, at least 13 need a yes. Once you pass and pay, you receive the certificate within 4 hours.
Every assessment is reviewed by SICE (Swiss Institute of Certification and Education) before the certificate is issued. The certificate itself is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE. It is based on your self-assessment, there is no on-site audit, and it is confirmed every year by a short online re-audit. You do not need an account to buy.
The price is CHF 749 (€749) in the first year, then CHF 499 (€499) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription. You can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year, and the certificate then ends with the paid year. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. If you certify two standards the discount is 20%, for three or more 30%, also on the yearly fee.
06: Requirements
What the questions cover
The assessment follows the core requirements of ISO 50001. If your company already works with energy data, most answers are quick.
- Energy baseline
- A documented starting point for your energy use, against which later results are compared.
- Significant energy uses
- The machines, buildings or processes that account for most of your consumption.
- Energy performance indicators
- Figures such as kWh per unit produced or per square metre, which show whether you are improving.
- Objectives and action plans
- Concrete targets for energy performance and the measures, owners and dates behind them.
- Procurement and monitoring
- Energy efficiency as a criterion when you buy products and services, and regular monitoring of the results.
