ISO 50001 renewal: how to keep your certificate valid

A Zertify ISO 50001 certificate is valid for 3 years. Every year a short online re-audit confirms it, and the re-audit is included in the yearly fee. This page shows what to review beforehand, what happens if you miss it, and how the process differs from the classic route.

01: Validity

How long is an ISO 50001 certificate from Zertify valid?

The certificate is valid for 3 years. In each year of that period, a short online re-audit confirms that your energy management system still meets the requirements. You complete it in your customer account. No auditor visits your site and nobody needs to be scheduled.

The re-audit is the point where you look at your energy data again. A new production line, a moved warehouse or a changed heating system all affect your energy use. The re-audit makes you check whether your records still describe the company as it is today.

02: Preparation

What to review in the company before each re-audit

Go through the key requirements of ISO 50001:2018 in the order below. Keep a dated note for each point, so you can answer from records and not from memory.

  1. Energy baseline

Check that the baseline still matches how you use energy. If you added a machine, changed shift patterns or moved a site, update the baseline and note the date.

  2. Significant energy uses

Compare your list of the biggest consumers with the latest meter readings and energy invoices. A consumer that has grown may now belong on the list.

  3. Energy performance indicators

Have current values for each EnPI, for example kWh per unit produced or per square metre of heated floor space. Note whether they moved in the right direction.

  4. Objectives and action plans

List which actions are finished, which are late and which are new. An action plan without a responsible person and a date will not hold up when you are asked about it.

  5. Procurement

Look at what you bought in the past year: motors, lighting, compressors, vehicles. Record whether energy efficiency was part of the decision.

  6. Monitoring and improvement

Check that management has reviewed the results (clause 9) and that deviations led to corrective actions (clause 10).

03: Overdue

What happens if the ISO 50001 re-audit is overdue?

The yearly re-audit is what confirms the certificate. If it is not done, the confirmation for that year is missing. Do not quote the certificate as current in a quote, tender or supplier questionnaire until you have completed it.

Your customers can check the certificate by number or QR code on the public verification page at any time. A purchasing department that does this will see the state of your certificate, not the state of your PDF.

If your answers have changed since last year and a requirement is no longer met, close that gap first. Set a fixed date for the re-audit, name one person who owns it and collect the energy data a week before. That is usually enough to avoid a late re-audit.

04: Classic route

How does this compare with surveillance and recertification audits?

On the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body, a certificate also runs for 3 years. Between the initial audit and the end of the cycle, the body returns for yearly surveillance audits. At the end of the cycle comes a recertification audit, which is larger than a surveillance audit.

Which route suits you depends on what your customers ask for. Some tenders name an on-site audit explicitly, others only ask for a verifiable certificate.

05: Zertify

Fees, billing and cancellation with Zertify

Zertify costs CHF 749 (€749) in the first year, then CHF 499 (€499) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue. You reach it through a self-assessment of 32 yes/no questions: 13 are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes, and at least 13 of the other 19 must also be yes. After you pass and pay, the certificate arrives within 4 hours.

Billing
The yearly fee is an automatic yearly subscription. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. You do not need an account to buy.
Cancellation
You can cancel at any time in your customer account, effective at the end of the current year. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year.
Multi-standard discount
With 2 standards you get 20% off, with 3 or more 30%. The discount also applies to the yearly fee.
