ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management

ISO 14001 for logistics companies

Shippers, tenders and supplier questionnaires ask logistics companies how they handle fuel, waste and spills. ISO 14001:2015 is the standard that documents the answer. With Zertify you complete a self-assessment online and receive the certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.

01: Demand

Why do customers ask logistics companies for ISO 14001?

A carrier or forwarder sits inside the supply chain of its customers. When a manufacturer or retailer reports on its own environmental footprint, transport and warehousing are part of it. That is why the supplier questionnaire from the purchasing department contains a line on environmental management, and your answer is either a certificate number or an explanation.

Tenders work in a similar way. Some invitations to tender list an environmental certificate as a condition, others award points for it. Without one, you lose ground before the price is even compared.

Customer audits are the third source of pressure. An auditor walks through your depot and asks who knows where used oil, pallets and film end up. ISO 14001 gives those answers a documented form.

Who asks for an environmental certificate and what they look for
Who asksWhat they want to see
Industrial shipperA certificate number they can enter in their supplier questionnaire
Retail purchasing departmentProof that fleet and warehouse impacts are managed and measured
Tender evaluatorA valid certificate attached to the bid
Customer auditorRecords on waste, fuel and incident handling at the depot
Subcontracting partnerA way to check your certificate without calling you

02: Aspects

Which environmental aspects does ISO 14001 cover in logistics?

The standard starts with a simple inventory: where does your business use resources and where do emissions and waste arise. In logistics the answer is concrete and mostly visible on the yard and in the warehouse.

Fuel and energy of the fleet
Diesel or electricity per vehicle, empty runs, idling at the loading bay, driving style.
Warehouse energy
Heating, lighting, charging of forklifts and pallet trucks, cooling in cold storage.
Packaging waste
Stretch film, cardboard, broken pallets, damaged goods that cannot be delivered.
Workshop waste
Used oil, tyres, batteries, filters and oily cloths from vehicle maintenance.
Spills and leaks
A leaking drum, a damaged pallet with liquids, a fuel spill on the yard that reaches a drain.
Refrigerants
Cooling units in reefer trucks and cold stores, including how leaks are noticed and repaired.

03: Requirements

How does a logistics company meet the key requirements?

The requirements of ISO 14001 are the same for every industry. What changes is the evidence. The table shows what that evidence can look like in a depot or a transport company.

Key requirements and examples from logistics
RequirementExample in a logistics company
Identify environmental aspects and impactsA list per site: fleet fuel, forklift charging, packaging waste, the drain on the yard
Record compliance obligationsA register of permits and legal duties for sites, vehicles and waste handling, with a responsible person and a review date
Set an environmental policyOne page signed by management: reduce fuel use, sort waste at source, report every spill
Plan objectives and actionsFewer empty runs through better route planning, LED lighting in the warehouse by a fixed date, each with an owner
Prepare for emergenciesA spill kit at every loading bay, a short drill for a leaking drum, a phone list on the wall
Monitor and report performanceMonthly fuel and waste figures, looked at by management and kept on file

In the structure of the standard, the first three rows belong mainly to planning (clause 6), the emergency routine to operation (clause 8) and the monthly figures to performance evaluation (clause 9).

04: Getting started

Where should a logistics company start?

Most of the material already exists in your invoices and daily routines. The work is to collect it and give it an owner.

  1. Walk each site

Go through the yard, the warehouse and the workshop with the site manager and note every place where energy, materials or waste are involved.

  2. Collect the figures you have

Fuel card statements, energy bills and waste collection invoices already give you a baseline.

  3. List the rules that apply

Write down the permits and legal duties for your sites and vehicles, and who checks them.

  4. Write the policy and two or three objectives

Keep them measurable: litres per 100 km, tonnes of mixed waste, number of spills.

  5. Agree who reacts to an incident

Name the person, the first step and the phone number for a spill or a leak.

  6. Review the numbers monthly

Fifteen minutes in a management meeting is enough, as long as the result is written down.

05: Zertify

How do you get ISO 14001 with Zertify?

You answer 34 yes/no questions online. Fourteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Among the other 20 questions you need at least 14 yes answers. No account is needed to start or to buy.

Once you have passed and paid, the certificate arrives within 4 hours. It is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and SICE reviews every assessment before issue. Each certificate can be checked publicly by number and QR code, so a purchasing department or tender evaluator can verify yours in seconds.

The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription that you can cancel at any time to the end of the current year in your customer account. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year. If you hold two standards the discount is 20%, with three or more it is 30%, also on the yearly fee. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

06: Routes

Online certificate or the classic route for a tender?

The classic route means an on-site audit by a certification body. It takes auditor days at your depots and has to be scheduled around your operations. The Zertify certificate is based on an online self-assessment without an on-site audit and is confirmed every year by a short online re-audit.

Read the wording of the tender or the customer's supplier requirements first. If they ask for a valid ISO 14001 certificate that can be verified, the online route covers it. If they explicitly require an on-site audit, you know before you spend anything.
