ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management
ISO 14001 for healthcare: certificate for clinics, practices and care providers
ISO 14001 shows that a healthcare business knows where its waste, energy use and emissions come from and manages them on purpose. Hospitals, care homes, laboratories and medical suppliers are asked for it in tenders and supplier questionnaires. With Zertify you answer 34 questions online and receive the certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.
01: Demand
Why healthcare customers and tenders ask for ISO 14001
Healthcare organisations produce a lot of material that has to be handled correctly: clinical waste, used consumables, laundry, packaging. Their purchasing departments pass this concern on to suppliers. A cleaning contractor, a medical technology dealer or a laboratory service is asked how it manages its own environmental impact.
The question usually arrives in one of three forms: a supplier questionnaire with a line for environmental management, a tender that awards points for a management system certificate, or a customer audit that asks for documented procedures. ISO 14001 answers all three with one document that the buyer can check.
The standard also matters for providers themselves. A private clinic, a group practice or a care home that tenders for cantonal or municipal mandates can show that environmental management is organised and not left to individual staff.
02: Impacts
Which environmental aspects ISO 14001 addresses in healthcare
The standard does not prescribe what a clinic must do. It asks you to identify your environmental aspects, meaning the activities that use resources or cause emissions and waste, and to decide which ones matter most. In healthcare these examples come up again and again.
- Clinical and infectious waste
- Sharps, dressings and contaminated material need separate collection and disposal. The aspect is the quantity and the route, the impact is the risk to people and the environment if it goes wrong.
- Pharmaceutical residues
- Expired medication and residues in wastewater. A pharmacy or ward that returns unused stock in a controlled way reduces this aspect.
- Energy for ventilation and sterilisation
- Operating theatres, sterilisation units and cold storage run for long hours. They are usually the largest energy consumers in a clinic.
- Anaesthetic gases and refrigerants
- Some anaesthetic gases and cooling agents are greenhouse gases. Leaks and unnecessary use are recorded and reduced.
- Laboratory chemicals and water
- Reagents, disinfectants and cleaning agents are stored, used and disposed of by defined rules. Water use in laundries and labs is measured.
- Single-use products and transport
- Disposable instruments, gowns and packaging, plus patient, staff and delivery trips, make up a large share of indirect impact.
03: Requirements
How a healthcare business meets the key requirements
ISO 14001 follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and belongs with management. The table shows what each core requirement looks like in a practice, clinic or care home.
| Requirement | Example in a healthcare business |
|---|---|
| Identify environmental aspects and impacts | A group practice lists waste streams, energy use, water, transport and chemicals, and rates which have the largest effect. |
| Record compliance obligations | A care home keeps a register of the laws and permits that apply to its waste, wastewater and storage of substances, with the person responsible for each. |
| Set an environmental policy | The management of a clinic signs a short policy that commits to compliance and to reducing waste and energy use. |
| Plan objectives and actions | A laboratory sets a goal to cut single-use packaging within a year and names who orders what. |
| Prepare for emergencies | A spill of disinfectant or laboratory reagent has a written procedure, a spill kit at a known place and a named contact. |
| Monitor and report performance | The practice manager reads meter values and waste volumes every quarter and reports changes to management. |
Which laws and permits apply depends on your canton, your activity and your size. The standard asks you to list them and check them, it does not list them for you.
04: Getting started
Where to start if you have no environmental management yet
Most small healthcare businesses already do part of the work: they separate waste, they have a disposal contract, they know their energy bill. ISO 14001 asks you to put this on paper and assign responsibility.
Walk through your premises
Note where waste, energy, water and chemicals are used in treatment rooms, storage, kitchen, laundry and car park.
Name an owner
One person on the management side is responsible for the system. In a small practice this is often the owner or the practice manager.
Write down the rules that apply to you
Collect permits, disposal contracts and legal requirements in one register and check it once a year.
Set one or two objectives
Choose targets you can measure, such as the volume of residual waste or the electricity use of the sterilisation unit.
Check your answers against the standard
The self-assessment shows which requirements you already meet and which are still open.
05: Zertify
Getting the ISO 14001 certificate with Zertify
The assessment for ISO 14001 has 34 yes/no questions. Fourteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20 questions, at least 14 must be yes to pass. You need no account to start.
The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE (Swiss Institute of Certification and Education). SICE reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued. After you pass and pay, the PDF arrives within 4 hours. It carries a certificate number and a QR code that lead to a public verification page, so a hospital buyer or tender office can check it without contacting you.
The price is CHF 699 (€699) in the first year, then CHF 469 (€469) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Billing is an automatic yearly subscription that you can cancel at any time in your customer account, to the end of the current year. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year. If you also want ISO 45001 for staff safety, a multi-standard discount of 20% for two standards and 30% for three or more applies, also to the yearly fee. Customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein pay prices that include 8.1% Swiss VAT.
06: Routes
Online certificate or on-site audit: which fits your tender?
The classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body takes longer and involves auditors visiting your premises. The Zertify certificate is based on an online self-assessment, has no on-site audit and is confirmed every year by a short online re-audit.
Check the tender documents or the supplier questionnaire before you decide. If the buyer asks for an ISO 14001 certificate that can be verified, a certificate with a public verification page serves that purpose. If a document names a specific type of audit, ask the buyer directly. The guide compares both routes.
