ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management

ISO 14001 for trades: the environmental certificate your clients ask for

General contractors, property managers and public clients ask trade businesses for proof of an environmental management system. ISO 14001 is that proof. With Zertify you complete an online self-assessment and receive the certificate within 4 hours after passing and payment.

01: Demand

Why do clients ask trade businesses for ISO 14001?

A trade business rarely sells to private customers alone. A large share of the work comes through general contractors, property managers, housing associations and public clients. Their tender documents and supplier questionnaires contain a section on environmental management, and the line asking for a certificate is hard to answer without one.

The reason is practical. The client wants to know how a subcontractor handles paint residues, offcuts, old heating oil or refrigerants on its sites. A purchasing department also needs a document it can file and check. A certificate with a number and a verification page fits that need.

ISO 14001 does not prescribe a technology. It asks that you know your environmental impact, know which rules apply to you and work on improving. For a company with eight or fifty employees, that is a manageable amount of paper.

02: Aspects

Which environmental aspects does a trade business have?

The standard calls them environmental aspects: the activities of your company that touch the environment. The details differ between a painter and a roofer, but the list of typical aspects is similar.

Solvents and paint residues
Brushes are cleaned, cans stay half full, thinners are left over. Painters and floor layers deal with this every week. The question is where the residues go.
Construction and demolition waste
Offcuts of timber, plasterboard, cable, pipe and insulation. Sorting on site decides what is recycled and what is disposed of at your cost.
Refrigerants and oils
Heating and cooling installers handle refrigerants, heating oil and lubricants when they install or remove equipment. A leak is an incident that needs a prepared response.
Vehicle fleet and fuel
Vans drive to several sites a day. Fuel use, route planning and oil and tyre changes belong in your records.
Dust, noise and wastewater
Cutting, grinding and washing tools produce dust and dirty water. Neighbours notice both, and so do site managers.
Packaging and materials
Pallets, foils and cartons arrive with every delivery. Ordering quantities and return arrangements with suppliers reduce what you have to dispose of.

Each aspect is rated by significance, with a named person responsible. Not every aspect needs an objective. The significant ones do.

03: Requirements

How does a trade business meet the key requirements?

The requirements below come from the core of ISO 14001, mainly clause 6 Planning, clause 8 Operation and clause 9 Performance evaluation. The right column shows what they can look like in a small company.

Key requirements of ISO 14001 and an example from a trade business
RequirementExample in a trade business
Identify environmental aspects and impactsA list per trade and per type of job, such as bathroom renovation, boiler replacement or roof work, each entry rated by significance.
Record compliance obligationsA register of the waste, water and chemicals rules and permits that apply to you, with the person who checks them and the date of the last check.
Set an environmental policyOne page signed by the owner, with a commitment to prevent pollution and keep improving. It hangs in the workshop and sits in the tender folder.
Plan objectives and actionsSwitch to water-based paints for interior jobs, put separate waste containers in every van, review progress each quarter.
Set up emergency preparednessA spill kit in each van, a short instruction for oil and refrigerant leaks, a contact list on the site folder.
Monitor and report performanceFuel use, waste by fraction and incidents are noted over the year and discussed once in a management meeting.

04: Example

What does ISO 14001 look like in a ten-person plumbing and heating firm?

This is an illustration, not a customer case. Take a plumbing and heating firm with ten employees that does boiler replacements, bathroom renovations and service calls. Setting up the system takes five steps.

  1. List the activities

For each activity, note which materials are used and which waste and emissions arise. A boiler replacement produces old oil, scrap metal and packaging. A bathroom renovation produces tiles, sealants and rubble.

  2. Find the rules

Write down which rules cover old oil tanks, refrigerants and hazardous waste, and who confirms that they are met.

  3. Assign responsibility

The owner signs the policy. One foreman becomes the contact for environmental questions on site and in the office.

  4. Set two or three objectives

For example sorted waste fractions in every van and a fixed return route for old boilers. Small objectives that the team can see are better than long lists.

  5. Check once a year

Compare fuel use, waste records and incidents with the previous year and note what you change. That review is the improvement cycle the standard asks for.

05: Zertify

How do you get ISO 14001 with Zertify?

Zertify issues the certificate on the basis of an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit. The assessment for ISO 14001:2015 has 34 yes/no questions. Fourteen of them are mandatory requirements of the standard and must all be answered yes. Of the other 20 questions, at least 14 must also be answered yes. You can buy without opening an account.

Every assessment is reviewed by SICE. The certificate is then issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE. It comes as a PDF with a certificate number and a QR code, and anyone can check it on the public verification page. A purchasing department can do that in a minute, without calling you.

The price is CHF 699 in the first year, then CHF 469 per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. The yearly subscription renews automatically. You cancel it in your customer account at any time, to the end of the current year, and the certificate then ends with the paid year. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Trade businesses that also want ISO 9001 or ISO 45001 get 20% off for two standards and 30% off for three or more, on the yearly fee as well.

06: Routes

Zertify or the classic route for a trade business?

The classic route means an on-site audit by a certification body. Some clients name that route in their tender conditions. Read the exact wording in the tender or the supplier questionnaire before you decide.

If the document asks for an ISO 14001 certificate and says nothing about how it must be obtained, a certificate with a public verification page answers it. If the client specifies the route, follow the client.
