ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management
ISO 9001 for mechanical engineering: proof of quality your customers recognise
Buyers, tenders and partners in mechanical engineering often ask for ISO 9001 before they place an order. With Zertify you take a self-assessment of 30 yes/no questions online and receive your certificate within 4 hours of passing and payment. It costs 599 CHF in the first year, then 399 CHF per year including the online re-audit.
01: Demand
Why customers ask for ISO 9001 in mechanical engineering
Mechanical engineering companies make parts, assemblies and machines that end up inside other products. A buyer cannot inspect every drawing, weld or turned part at your premises. A certificate to ISO 9001:2015 gives the buyer a recognised signal that you manage quality in a structured way.
You will usually meet the request in three places. Purchasing departments include it in supplier questionnaires. Tenders list a quality management certificate as a condition or as a scoring criterion. Partners and larger manufacturers ask for it when they select suppliers for a long-term relationship.
ISO 9001 does not say how to machine, weld or assemble. It sets requirements for how you plan, control and improve the work. That is why it fits a job shop with ten people as well as a machine builder with several departments.
02: Processes and risks
Typical mechanical engineering processes and the risks ISO 9001 addresses
The standard is built around a process approach and risk-based thinking. In a mechanical engineering company, the risks are easy to recognise. The table links common processes to the matching parts of the standard.
| Process | Typical risk | ISO 9001 clause |
|---|---|---|
| Quotation and order review | Drawing, tolerance or delivery requirements are misread before work starts | 8.2 Requirements for products and services |
| Design and development | A change to a drawing does not reach the workshop | 8.3 Design and development |
| Purchasing material and subcontracted work | Wrong material grade or a late subcontractor affects the whole order | 8.4 Control of externally provided processes, products and services |
| Production and assembly | Work instructions differ between shifts or machines | 8.5 Production and service provision |
| Measuring and inspection | A gauge is out of calibration and bad parts pass unnoticed | 7.1.5 Monitoring and measuring resources, 8.6 Release |
| Nonconforming parts and complaints | The same defect returns because the cause was never fixed | 8.7 Nonconforming outputs, 10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action |
None of these risks is new to you. The standard asks you to name them, assign responsibility and keep simple records that show the controls work.
03: Requirements
Key ISO 9001 requirements, shown with workshop examples
The six key requirements below apply to every organisation. Here is what each one can look like in a mechanical engineering company.
- Context of the organisation (clause 4)
- A machine builder lists its interested parties: OEM customers, material suppliers, subcontractors, employees. It notes what each of them expects, such as delivery reliability or documented inspection.
- Quality policy and measurable objectives (clauses 5 and 6)
- A CNC job shop writes a short policy and sets objectives such as on-time delivery and a lower rate of rework. The owner signs the policy and reviews the objectives regularly.
- Risks and opportunities (clause 6)
- The company records risks such as a single supplier for a special alloy or dependence on one skilled setter. For each risk it defines an action, for example a second source or a trained deputy.
- Defined and controlled processes (clause 8)
- Order review, programming, machining, inspection and dispatch are described briefly. Each has an owner, inputs, outputs and the records that prove the step was done.
- Resources and competence (clause 7)
- Operators, welders and inspectors have documented training. Measuring equipment such as callipers, micrometres and gauges has a calibration schedule.
- Monitoring and continual improvement (clauses 9 and 10)
- Internal audits, a management review and a log of nonconformities and corrective actions show how scrap, rework and customer complaints lead to real changes.
04: Preparation
How to prepare your company before the self-assessment
Most mechanical engineering companies already hold much of the evidence the assessment asks about. Order confirmations, drawings, inspection reports and calibration records are the raw material. A short preparation makes the questions quick to answer.
List customer requirements
Collect the quality requirements from your main customers: drawings, tolerances, inspection documents and delivery terms.
Map your core processes
Write one page that shows the path from enquiry to delivery, with the person responsible for each step.
Gather your records
Find inspection reports, calibration lists, training records and the log of complaints and corrective actions.
Set a policy and objectives
Write a short quality policy and two or three objectives you can measure with data you already have.
Name who decides
Agree who reviews quality results, who handles nonconforming parts and who approves changes.
05: Zertify
Get ISO 9001 certified online with Zertify
Zertify issues ISO certificates based on an online self-assessment. There is no on-site audit. You answer 30 yes/no questions and pass with 20 of 30. SICE, the Swiss Institute of Certification and Education, reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE, and you receive it within 4 hours after passing and payment.
Every certificate can be checked publicly by its number and QR code, so a buyer or tender office can verify it in seconds. The certificate is valid for 3 years and is confirmed every year by a short online re-audit.
The price is 599 CHF (599 EUR) in the first year, then 399 CHF (399 EUR) per year including the yearly online re-audit. Prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT for customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The yearly subscription renews automatically. You can cancel at any time in your customer account to the end of the current year, and the certificate then ends with the paid year. You do not need an account to buy.
If you also need another standard, such as ISO 14001 for environmental management, a multi-standard discount applies: 20% for 2 standards and 30% for 3 or more, also on the yearly fee.
06: Before you decide
Check what your customer or tender requires
Requirements differ between buyers. Some ask only for a valid ISO 9001 certificate. Others describe the way it must be obtained. Read the wording in your supplier questionnaire or tender documents, or ask the purchasing contact directly.
If the route does not matter to your customer, an online certificate saves time and effort, because your team does not need to plan audit days around production. If you are unsure, compare the classic route with an on-site audit by a certification body and the online route before you choose.
