01: Overview

What ISO 9001 means for a company in Lucerne

ISO 9001:2015 is the world's leading standard for quality management systems (QMS). It sets out the requirements for a system that helps an organisation consistently deliver products and services that meet customer requirements and regulatory obligations. The standard is the same wherever you work: in Lucerne, elsewhere in Switzerland or abroad.

It is built on seven quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making and relationship management. In practice, the standard asks you to do six things.

Understand your context
Document who your customers and other interested parties are and what shapes your business (clause 4).
Set policy and objectives
Define a quality policy and measurable objectives, with clear responsibility at management level (clauses 5 and 6).
Assess risks and opportunities
Look at what could go wrong or improve, and plan accordingly (clause 6).
Ensure resources and competence
Make sure people, tools and know-how fit the work (clause 7).
Define and control processes
Describe how products and services are planned, delivered and checked (clause 8).
Monitor and improve
Measure performance and improve continually (clauses 9 and 10).

02: Typical users

Which businesses in the Lucerne region typically need ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is not tied to one industry. Companies in the Lucerne region are a varied group, and several kinds of business typically look at the standard. We describe them in general terms only.

Manufacturing companies
Producers of all sizes use ISO 9001 to show that production and quality checks follow defined processes.
Trades and craft businesses
Contractors and craft firms use it to document how work is planned, carried out and handed over.
Service, consulting and IT firms
Service providers, consultancies and software companies use it to show consistent delivery and handling of customer requirements.
Public institutions
Organisations in the public sector use it to structure processes and document results.

The usual trigger is simple. A customer or a tender asks for proof of a quality management system. Or a growing company wants its processes written down and repeatable. If either applies to you, a certificate is a practical answer.

03: Two routes

Classic on-site audit or online route: what changes

Both routes have a place. Which one suits you depends on what your customers expect and how much time you can invest. The guide on certification routes helps you compare them.

04: Zertify

How Zertify fits in for companies in Lucerne

Zertify is an online platform. We have no office in Lucerne, and we do not need one: the whole process takes place on your screen. You answer the questions when it suits you, from your office or workshop.

The certificate is based on your online self-assessment. It is issued by G6 Agency AG under licence from SICE (Swiss Institute of Certification and Education). SICE reviews every assessment before the certificate is issued. Every certificate can be checked publicly by number and QR code, and a short online re-audit confirms it each year.

The price is CHF 599 (€599) in the first year, then CHF 399 (€399) per year including the yearly online re-audit. The certificate is valid for 3 years. If you certify against several standards, you get 20% off for 2 standards and 30% off for 3 or more, also on the yearly fee. For customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, prices include 8.1% Swiss VAT.

05: Steps

From Lucerne to certificate in four steps

The process is short and clear. You do not need an account to buy.

  1. Start the self-assessment

Open the online self-assessment. It is free and has 30 yes/no questions on the requirements of ISO 9001.

  2. Pass the threshold

You pass with 20 of 30 points. The questions follow the structure of the standard, from context to improvement.

  3. Pay and confirm

Choose the certificate and pay. The first-year price is CHF 599 (€599), and the yearly fee afterwards is CHF 399 (€399).

  4. Receive your certificate

SICE reviews your assessment. The certificate is issued by G6 Agency AG within 4 hours after passing and payment, with a number and QR code for verification.

Billing is an automatic yearly subscription. You can cancel at any time to the end of the current year in your customer account. If you cancel, the certificate ends with the paid year.

06: Preparation

What to prepare before you start

The self-assessment is easier if you know your own processes. Before you begin, think about who your customers are, what your quality goals are and how you handle complaints and mistakes. Look at who is responsible for what, and how you train and brief your staff.

If a point is missing, that is useful to know. The questions show where your quality management is already solid and where it needs work. You decide on the next step with a clear picture.

Cost is often the first worry for small companies. The guide on certification cost explains what drives the price and what to look at when you compare offers.
